The 57th annual Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair (SASEF) was held at the University of Tennessee April 7-9, 2009. Section Vice Chair Martin Bauer judged the contestants and made the following IEEE Special Awards for he best demonstrations of electrical or electronics design or computer science.

SCPS-01 "Data Mining and Visualization: Predicting the Next Epidemic", Rowan Chakoumakos, Oak Ridge High School
(Senior Computer Science), also* *Senior Grand Reserve Champion (2nd place in senior division)
